For a brief period of time in my childhood, Cartesius thought he had positive proof that they were all actually a single being, returning again and again. The Monstruwacans possessed thousands of images comparing the creatures who came to peer, and still no one could say what they were, or how many. I could write for hours about all the examinations, observations, and speculations spent on the Headland alone.
